About

I work at Bowdoin College as the Writing Program Director and Associate Director of the Baldwin Center for Learning and Teaching. In this role I consult with instructors about writing pedagogy, host workshops for faculty, and train Bowdoin’s peer writing tutors. I also direct the First-Year Writing Seminar (FYWS) Program and teach one FYWS on “Writing with and about Generative AI.”

I have thirty years of experience as a teacher, writer, researcher, and academic administrator. I have taught literature, writing, and English education classes at colleges and universities in Maine, Ohio, and Indiana. I have also worked as a high school and middle school humanities teacher in Washington, D.C.

My administrative, teaching, and research interests focus on writing studies and sustainable writing programs; disability studies and equal access to university services; and Victorian literature and the visual arts.

Courses at Bowdoin College:

“Writing with and about Generative AI”

The explosion of generative AI in the fall of 2022 led to doomsday predictions about learning and teaching in higher education, including the death of the college essay (Marche, 2022). Now that we are almost three years beyond that initial flashpoint, we can ask with more equanimity about the promises and pitfalls of generative AI. In this course, we will study together what it means to write with and about AI. How might AI assist us as we seek to develop our own ideas and our own writerly voices? When does AI get in our way? How can we navigate the most pressing challenges of generative AI, including those related to its ethical use and environmental impact? Students will have the opportunity to create final projects about generative AI related to their own areas of interest, drawing on course readings and original research.

“Peer Writing Tutor Training Course”

This class is designed to familiarize students not only with the kinds of courses, assignments, and writing problems they’ll encounter but also with the theories and strategies that will enable them to meet the challenges of working in the writing center.

  1. Wow! We have a writer in the extended Kanwit clan! I used to want to be a writer ( and a baseball player, general , or congressman) but I am most happy being a ——— SCULPTOR! Not quite sure how we are related but certainly we must be! Your writing seems fascinating and I d like to hear more about it! Roy Kanwit, Spencertown NY
