About

I work at Bowdoin College as the Writing Program Director and Associate Director of the Baldwin Center for Learning and Teaching. In this role I consult with instructors about writing pedagogy, host workshops for faculty, and train Bowdoin’s peer writing tutors. I also direct the First-Year Writing Seminar (FYWS) Program and teach one FYWS on “Writing with and about Generative AI.”

I have thirty years of experience as a teacher, writer, researcher, and academic administrator. I have taught literature, writing, and English education classes at colleges and universities in Maine, Ohio, and Indiana. I have also worked as a high school and middle school humanities teacher in Washington, D.C.

My administrative, teaching, and research interests focus on writing studies and sustainable writing programs; disability studies and equal access to university services; and Victorian literature and the visual arts. My first book, Victorian Art Criticism and the Woman Writer (Ohio State University Press, 2013), examines the development of specialized art commentary in a period when art education became a national concern in Britain. I am currently working on a collaborative book on sustainable writing across the curriculum programs.

  1. Wow! We have a writer in the extended Kanwit clan! I used to want to be a writer ( and a baseball player, general , or congressman) but I am most happy being a ——— SCULPTOR! Not quite sure how we are related but certainly we must be! Your writing seems fascinating and I d like to hear more about it! Roy Kanwit, Spencertown NY
